2021 Polaris RZR Pro XP Side by Side build by Real Street

2021 Polaris RZR Pro XP Side by Side build by Real Street

As Real Street expands into powersports, we went ahead and picked up this brand new 2021 Polaris RXR Pro XP. It comes from the factory with 181hp to the crank, and our plan is to double that with a package that will survive the abuse of recreational trail riding between races. Check out each phase of the build below.

  • Goal: 400hp Trail Monster
  • Fuel: Pump 93oct Gasoline & E85 (Flex Fuel)

Below you will find the parts list used to build his car separated into categories with explanations for each.

1. Communication Radio

Overview

Before adding power, we decided to knock out some of the driver experience modifications first. There are currently 3 side by sides in the Real Street group (theres a 2021 Can-Am X3 Turbo RR and a 2020 Yamaha YXZ 1000R) so we installed a Race Radio package from PCI.

This kit comes with the PCI Trax Plus radio package (with Kenwood head unit upgrade) as well as HJC helmets rigged with PCI Trax earphones and microphone. Stereo audio goes in both ears and the mic sits just in front of your mouth inside the helmet. These helmets also have a clean air port for the PCI clean air system (sold separately below). Installation was easy with PCI's vehicle specific dash panels.

Note from Clay: Communicating with other riders during a ride can be a challenge. It's not like you can just pick up your cell phone and call them. They won't even know they missed a call until they stop and happen to check their phones and by then they could be miles away. You don't realize how important communicating with the other riders in your group is until you get used to it and then ride without it. When we are aggressively riding trails as a group, the person up front often calls out obstacles to the rest of the group like stumps or rocks, oncoming traffic, and which path to take at a fork in the road. If someone has to stop for some reason, they can let the rest of the group know so they don't get left behind. Now that I have gotten used to riding with comms, I would be frustrated riding without it.

  • PCI Trax Plus California Ultimate 2 + DSP Radio Package w/ Kenwood Radio Upgrade
  • PCI Trax Wire HJC CS-R3 Full Face Helmet with Raceair & Comms Radio
  • PCI Dash Panel and Side Panels for Polaris

Note: This kit is designed for 2 riders with compatible helmets.

2. Clean Air

Overview

If you've ever ridden in a dry sandy area, especially in a group with other riders, you know how much dust can go in your eyes, nose, and mouth. A clean air system continuously pumps filtered air into your helmet which keeps the dust out, keeps your visor from fogging up, and keeps your head cool inside your helmet. This kit supports 2 riders with compatible helmets.

The PCI clean air kit comes with its own hoses and fittings, but we opted to upgrade to the magnetic Maglock quick disconnect hose and adapters. This adds a layer of convenience when taking your helmet off and putting it on.

Note from Clay: The first time I went out riding I didnt even bring sunglasses to protect my eyes. I was riding behind 3 other side by sides and had so much find sand in my eyes that I could barely blink. By the end of the day, my sinuses were crusty and my throat was horse from all the dust. Being able to stay on the throttle through the continuous dust cloud of riders in front of me was well worth the investment.

  • PCI Raceair Boost Package with Remote Control (one per vehicle, supports up to 2 helmets)
  • Maglock Air Connector Kit for Single Helmet with Pre-Existing Forced Air Port (one per helmet)
  • Maglock Air Hose 1.25" (sold by the foot, needs 5ft for driver, 4ft for passenger)
    • The Can-Am uses about 4ft to 5ft of hose per rider depending on where the pump is mounted and how the hoses are routed.

3. Cage & Roof

Overview

After we handled the Radio Communication, Clean Air, and GPS...our next concern was safety. We opted for an aftermarket radius roof cage from LSK. The factory cage is sufficient for a low speed tip over, but it really won't withstand a high speed flip during aggressive riding. So we opted for a real deal cage that will keep us safe if things go wrong. This kit arrives as bare pipes that are pre-cut and pre-bent. We welded the kit up here at the shop, and had it powder coated black locally.

4. Suspension

Overview

After we handled the cage and roof...our next concern was Suspension. The 2021 Polaris RZR Pro XP only came in 64" width, but we wanted to extend that out to 72" so we installed an HCR long travel kit meant for use with stock shocks. Because we were increasing the width, we had to get longer axle hubs from a Turbo S, and we upgraded the ball joints while we were in there as that is known to be a weak point during aggressive riding.

The HCR kit comes uncoated so you can have it coated whatever color will match your styling, however we opted to have ours coated clear so you can see the welds without having to worry about rust.

4. Bolt-On Horsepower

Overview

Our first round of horsepower mods revolved around keeping the stock engine for now. We upgraded the intake and exhaust parts with parts from Evo Powersports to get more air into and out of the engine, and replace any intake side parts that might collapse from the increased suction of increased boost.

We upgraded the intercooler, charge tubes, and blow off valve to handle the additional boost that the upcoming ECU tune will provide.

  • Evo Powersports Magnum 3" Turbo-Back Exhaust
  • Evo Powersports High Flow Air Filter
  • Evo Powersports V-Flow Intake Tube
  • Evo Powersports V-Flow Bed to Air Box Tube
  • Evo Powersports Silicone Charge Tube
  • Evo Powersports Race Intercooler Core
  • Evo Powersports V2 Blow Off Valve

5. Wheels & Tires

Overview

We tried a few tire combinations on this vehicle before ending up with 35" EFX Grapplers and KMC Grenade Beadlocks. Our latest travel trip with this vehicle was to UTV Takeover in Utah where there was a good mix of hardpack, soft sand, and rock ledges. So we wanted something tall that could do it all. Overall we are happy with how this setup handled the terrain and we think it looks pretty great too!

  • KMC KS235 Beadlocks Black/Black
  • EFX Grappler 35x10x15 4 PLY DOT UTV Tires
  • Gorilla Acorn Lug Nuts 12-1.5 w/ Valves Stems Black
